Why Do Some B2B Public Relations Programs Fail? | Business 2 ...

Last month, I was invited to speak with the marketing committee at the Tooling and Manufacturing Association in Chicago about public relations. We had a good dialogue about how to develop an effective public relations strategy and maximize its impact on a limited budget (you can find the presentation here). As I was gathering my thoughts about the successful components of a B2B public relations program, I couldn?t help but reflect about the flip side as well.

I?ve had the benefit of being part of PR programs that thrive, and ones that struggle despite the PR team?s best efforts. Having been at the same agency for nearly 11 years, I?ve observed some common issues in withering programs:

  • It isn?t tied to a larger objective and then translated to something meaningful
  • Its activities and results are siloed and not integrated into the larger picture
  • It is constantly changing direction
  • It relies on poor metrics to communicate impact
  • It tries to do too much
  • It is tied to an old school approach to PR
  • It limits input to a handful of people
  • Its value is not supported by the people at the top of the organization

I?d argue that the last point is the most critical because it feeds so many of the other issues listed above. Unfortunately, it?s also the most out of your control. But, that doesn?t mean you should give up when you encounter unsupportive management or any of the other challenges listed above. In most cases, you can turn things around with a healthy dose of creativity, time and ongoing education and communication.

And if you feel that your hands are tied because there isn?t enough budget or resources, then it?s time to re-work your plan and get focused. That is often one of the biggest detriments to programs. You start trying to do so much that you become mired in the tactics and lose sight of the mission. When you narrow your focus, you can deepen the impact.

What other issues would you add to the list above? What advice would you offer to turn around a struggling program?

Lloyd's of London prepares for Greek exit-paper

LONDON | Sun May 27, 2012 11:35am BST

LONDON May 27 (Reuters) - The Lloyd's of London insurance market has reduced its exposure "as much as possible" to the crisis-hit euro zone in preparation for a collapse of the bloc's single currency, its chief executive told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

Richard Ward said Lloyd's had put in place a contingency plan to switch euro underwriting to multi-currency settlement if Greece abandoned the euro, and that it could have to take writedowns on its 58.9 billion pounds ($92.1 billion) investment portfolio if the euro zone broke up.

"With all the concerns around the euro zone at the moment, we've got to be careful doing business in Europe and there are a lot of question marks over writing business in the future in euros," Ward told the UK newspaper.

"I don't think that if Greece exited the euro it would lead to the collapse of the euro zone but what we need to do is prepare for that eventuality," he said.

Europe accounts for 18 percent of Lloyd's 23.5 billion pounds of gross written premiums, mainly in France, Germany, Spain and Italy, the newspaper said.

On Wednesday, Reuters reported that each euro zone country was preparing a contingency plan for the eventuality of Greece leaving the single currency.

Lloyd's, which traces its origins back 324 years to a London coffee house where merchants met to insure ships, suffered its second worst ever loss last year after absorbing record claims from catastrophes including Japan's Tohoku earthquake. Discipline In Goal Setting - Self Improvement Blog : Self ...

Discipline-(per Websters) training that corrects, molds, or perfects; control gained by obedience or training.

Discipline means sticking to your action plan no matter what. It means you don?t get sidetracked by watching TV or going out with your friends when you should be working on your plan. It means that nothing comes between you and the things you need to do to reach your goals. For example, my goal for today was to get up at 5:30am and go to the gym. Today is leg day, usually one of my toughest workout days. It would have been so easy to turn off the alarm, get back in bed and sleep for another hour. It?s so easy to tell myself that skipping one workout won?t hurt, after all, I can make it up tomorrow. However, before you know it, one missed workout turns to two, and then three and so on. It is so vitally important that you keep your long term in sight. you cannot achieve the results that you want by skipping workouts. Self-discipline involves what needs to be done rather than what you would like to do. Self-discipline is the key to achieving your desired goals. You have to take responsibility for yourself and your results. No one else cares about your goals as much as you do. They are your goals and it is up to you do what it takes to reach them. The more control you have over your life, the more control you have over your success and happiness. You are the only one that can change your life.

If you have things that you want to accomplish it is up to you and you alone to do the things necessary to accomplish those things. Having self-discipline is the one thing that you must have to achieve anything. The good news is if you feel you don?t have self-discipline now, you can start immediately to change that. Just have the self-discipline to say ?I am going to change? and do it! There are a few guidelines that you can follow to help you improve on your self-discipline:

A. Take responsibility for yourself.

You alone are responsible for what happens in your life and what you achieve. You have to make decisions that propel you to what you want your life to be. Do you choose to work on your goal for the next hour or do you choose to watch television? It is up to you!

B. Don?t wait. Get started today. By putting it off, you are procrastinating and procrastination is a sign of poor self-discipline. If your goal is something that you want badly enough, why would you want to wait?

C. Practice good habits. Developing control over your day-to-day life is the first step in learning that you can control your success and happiness. Habits can be either good or bad. They can make you are break you. You have to decide which habits that you have are keeping you from achieving what you want and it is up to you to break them. Remember A above, you must take responsibility for yourself.

D. Focus on your rewards. What positive results will you see from your efforts. How will your life be improved? Visualize the rewards of your success as clearly as you can. Picture in your mind how much better your life will be when you achieve your target.

How I ended up playing air guitar vs. the Westboro Baptist Church

In less than 24 hours, a video that I posted on YouTube had over 1,400 views -- and its all because of hate.

Hate created the Westboro Baptist Church and the anger and (dare I say) hate of reasonable people in the Kansas/Missouri area caused this video to become a minor viral hit.

Like most people who live in Kansas, I have gotten used to the inappropriate "protests" of Fred Phelps' hatemongering "church." Based out of Topeka, they being their "God Hates Fags" signs to seemingly random places (like military funerals, political rallys, and car washes) and stand around embarrassing themselves and our state in the name of free speech and some twisted sense of social justice.

Well, I'm no stranger to inappropriate and embarrassing behavior. As a competitive air guitarist (see video directly below), I have received my fair share of scorn from "serious" music fans for making a mockery of rock n' roll--something that shouldn't be taken too seriously in the first place.

Tuesday night, me and a group of twenty or so of my like-minded air guitarists (hell bent on pushing the art and sport of competitive air guitar forward) decided to do a two-minute flash mob outside the Sprint Center at the Van Halen concert while rabid VH fans waited in line to be let in.

The problem is, the Sprint Center opened doors 15 minutes early and there wasn't much of a line (or crowd) to begin with. (Everybody, it seems, was across the street in bars waiting the opening act Kool & the Gang, out.) With our generous, sure-to-be-well-received performance (we were doing "Hot for Teacher" and "Panama" after all) on the rocks, I looked for another alternative of a place where people might be gathering.

It was then that we spotted the Westboro Baptist Church standing on the curb down the street. It was clear that somebody needed to stand up to them, and we were just the shameless fools to do it.

Here's what's weird: I never felt a moment of doubt. I knew right away that what I wanted to do ASAP was get right up in their grill and shove as much air guitar in their face as often as possible in two minutes. It just seemed cosmically correct. If they didn't like the gay lifestyle/culture and wanted to protest at a Van Halen concert, we would confront them with something equally ridiculous but with our hearts full of joy and laughter and positive energy.

I'm not in the habit of shoving my crotch into strangers' faces to try and get a reaction, but for some reason it came very naturally in front of the Westboro Baptist Church. More than anyone else I know of, they deserve it.

Performing air guitar is liberating and it somehow fills me with confidence--confidence I wouldn't normally have if I was trying to mount some sort of "intelligent" protest against these jokers. No, this felt right: a stupid amount of flailing about and invading their personal space during an air guitar routine--the purest expression of rock n' roll love imaginable.

Once we got over to the curb the Westboro Baptist Church had staked out as their position (watched heavily by the police, might I add), we started the music and immediately began our blissful bacchanal. Here's what was interesting--the cops were actually pushing us closer to the WBC, not warning us to stand back. Let me explain:

The Westboro Baptist Church protesters were standing at the edge of the curb facing the street so everyone could see their dumb-ass signs. The street was blocked off at that spot, but the cops weren't letting anyone in the street within a certain radius. I kept falling off the tiny curb and onto the street and the police were yelling at me to "stay on the curb!"

Ironically, what this meant was that in order for me to perform some sweet hot licks for the WBC, I had to stay on the street curb; the same one they were standing right up against! This means that there was a razor-thin line between them and the curb, with me firmly stuck in the middle and the cops yelling at me to stay off the street every time I fell backwards.

Essentially, the police were forcing us in the angry faces of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Luckily my friend Ian caught the last 30 seconds of the air guitar vs. WBC showdown on his cell phone. I spent most of my time miming some hot moves in front of a not-amused Shirley Phelps, but none of that was caught on camera. What you see in this video is KC air guitarist Thunderball and I working together to create air magic in a hostile environment (in front of some glasses-clad, hipster-looking hatemonger) and not giving a crap what happened.

Like I said before, I never would have been so energetic and fearless in the face of these notorious blowhards if it weren't for the liberating feeling of air guitar. It empowers me to do stupid things and have a great time.Am I spreading positive energy and all that? Sure, but ...

It's just as air guitar legend Bj?rn T?roque once said, "Make air, not war."

Obesity not always tied to higher heart risk ... - Health and Fitness

An obese person isn?t inevitably at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death, a new U.K. study finds.

?The people really at risk are the ones who have obesity in combination with other metabolic health risk factors,? said Mark Hamer, a principal research associate at University College London who worked on the study.

The results are in line with most previous research that defined metabolic health as having normal levels of markers like blood pressure, blood sugar, HDL, or ?good? cholesterol, and C-reactive protein, which is a measure of inflammation in the body.

?People with good metabolic health are not at risk of future heart disease ? even if they are obese,? Hamer told Reuters Health.

On the flip side, the non-obese in poor metabolic shape face as much risk as the unhealthy obese, the researchers concluded.

The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology Metabolism, are based on more than 22,000 middle-aged participants in national health studies conducted in England and Scotland.

According to the researchers, the results suggest that metabolic factors may be more important in predicting a person?s risk of cardiovascular disease than excess body weight in itself.

From a clinical perspective, stratifying individuals based upon their metabolic profile may help to identify those ? both obese and non-obese ? who should be treated with drugs or changes in diet and exercise, the study authors noted.

?We encourage obese people to lose weight for their health, but (some) provision should be made in how we screen people for metabolic risk,? Hamer told Reuters Health.

An adult who has a body mass index ? a height-to-weight ratio ? of 30 or higher is considered obese. A normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, and a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.

During the past 20 years, obesity has increased significantly in the United States. More than a third of American adults are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Poor metabolic health?

For the new report, Hamer and a colleague collected data on participants? BMI and metabolic profiles and followed individuals, on average, for seven years. Then they looked at how many participants had died during the study period, and from what causes.

None of the participants had heart disease at the start of the study.

Almost a quarter were obese, and just under a quarter of those were considered ?metabolically healthy obese? ? meaning they had no abnormal blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar or inflammation readings.

During the study period, more than 600 participants died from heart-related causes and 1,800 from other causes.

The obese individuals in good metabolic health were not at greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than the metabolically healthy non-obese, the researchers found.

But both non-obese and obese participants in poor metabolic health had a 59 percent and 64 percent increased risk of dying from heart disease, respectively, compared to the healthy non-obese.

Among the metabolically unhealthy participants, the non-obese had high levels of hypertension and inflammation ? comparable to those in the unhealthy obese group.

The metabolically unhealthy obese also had a 72 percent higher risk of dying from non-heart-related causes than those in good health.

That was after taking into account study participants? age, sex, smoking, physical activity and socioeconomic status.

Researchers found the results to be largely unchanged when they used waist circumference to define obesity instead of BMI.

?Think more broadly?

Hamer and his colleague note in their report that a strength of their study was having a large study population. But because the researchers only measured participants? metabolic risk factors at the beginning of the study, it?s possible that some of the metabolically healthy obese went on to develop unhealthy readings.

The study shows the need ?to think more broadly about obesity? rather than to focus on body weight alone, said Dr. Cora Lewis, a professor of preventive medicine and an epidemiologist at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, who was not involved in the research.

?If you are obese and you struggle with weight, but your (metabolic) risk factors are fine, that may not be such a bad place to be,? Lewis told Reuters Health ? adding that only ?a minority of people? fit the description of ?metabolically-healthy obese.?

Equally important, the study shows that people may be at increased metabolic risk no matter what they weigh, she noted.

Excess body fat may be carried not only under the skin, but also inside the abdomen, heart, liver and muscles ? making it hard to tell ? she added.

?BMI doesn?t always tell you everything. If you are non-obese, but you have high cholesterol or hypertension, you have some work to do,? Lewis said.

What Happened to all the Astronauts? | assailedteacher

When the moon was made out of cheese.

ETS recently released a report about the lack of civic engagement of the American child. (Click to watch the video here.)

It asks the question: despite the fact that history is a core subject in most schools, why are only 25% of students proficient in civic knowledge? Apparently, only 24% of 4th graders know why we have a Constitution and 22% of 8th graders know what the Supreme Court does.

These certainly are alarming statistics. It is ironic that ETS, which stands for Educational Testing Services, is bemoaning the decline of civic engagement. While ETS is not nearly as objectionable as Pearson or Wireless Generation, it could be argued that the entire regime of standardized testing that ETS represents has helped along the disenfranchisement of the American citizen. The narrowing of the curriculum to which testing lends itself enables subjects like history, which should be studied and assessed as whole cloth, to be chopped up into isolated bits of trivia. This testing regime goes part of the way towards explaining why children lack civic knowledge

The narrowing that we see today threatens to do away with history as a subject altogether. One of the bromides of education reform is that schools need to prepare students for the 21st century economy, which promises to be a highly technological affair. This means stressing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. ETS is rightfully concerned about the health of American democracy. Yet, the education reformers of today are more concerned with keeping the United States economically competitive. They have shown little regard for activating the American people as citizens. Rather, they are single-mindedly obsessed with activating the American people as the low-paid technological workforce of the future.

Part of this is nothing new. There was a wave of science and math education after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957. Our leaders believed the Russians were beating us technologically during the Cold War. Not to be outdone, President Kennedy promised to land a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s by riding a spate of investment in STEM education.

There was a major difference between that wave of STEM and the current wave. When the first people landed on the moon, they planted an American flag because it was the culmination of a civic exercise. The resources of an entire nation had been working towards that moment. It may have been ?one giant leap for mankind?, but there was no doubt who out of mankind?s representatives took the credit for that leap: those that lived under the Stars and Stripes. In short, we invested in STEM as a civic exercise.

Today, the justification for STEM education is naked economic interest. We must be able to keep up with our global competitors not as a matter of civic pride, but because we are in danger of losing our spot in the marketplace. There is no talk anymore of producing the next generation of astronauts. Astronauts were intergalactic conquistadors working in the service of a country; a country that was advancing knowledge for all mankind. Today, we tell kids to study STEM because the economy of tomorrow demands it. There is no purpose other than the profit motive.

History and civics were necessary to produce astronauts. Even if the version of America that children learned was sanitized, at least there was the idea that America was worth knowing. People had to have an idea of what that flag on the moon represented.

On the other hand, history and civics is irrelevant in the global marketplace. Business today knows no borders. Products, capital and labor cross national boundaries with ease. In fact, allowing future generations to imbibe the lessons of freedom and justice that come with any sanitized reading of American history might make the low-paid functionaries of tomorrow less than compliant. There is no place for civics in the current Neoliberal regime of education reform. The only subjects worthy of study are the equations and formulas of STEM. The only way to measure learning is the bloodless data of high-stakes testing. The only purpose behind this effort is cold economic calculation.

So, while history is still a core subject in most American schools, it is a subject that is devalued in the sterilized world of education reform.

This leads us to other reasons why the civic spirit is lacking in American children. While it is a cause for concern that less than a third of schoolchildren know about the Constitution or the Supreme Court, it is safe to say that the proportion of adults who know these things is not much higher.

To a great extent, the United States has always been an anti-intellectual place. On the other hand, the era in which we currently live marries good old American anti-intellectualism to widespread Gen X apathy.

Since the 1970s, it has become the norm for voter turnout to hover around 50% even for presidential elections. Congressional and local races are generally much lower. A change happened during that nervous decade. The Pentagon Papers, Watergate and the increasing vulgarity of popular culture gave rise to widespread cynicism among the electorate. All leaders were bums. All politicians were the same. It did not matter which politician?s slop the electorate eats up, for it all winds up the same flavor in the end.

To a great extent, the cynicism in the electorate gets at something real. No matter how well-liked a politician is, there is always the understanding that we are being gamed. Bill Clinton left office with high approval ratings, yet by that time he had already proven to be a philanderer who had committed perjury. His moniker of ?Slick Willie? was almost an endearing term. He was the slimy politician that Americans loved to love.

Contrast the benign ?Slick Willie? to Richard Nixon?s dark nickname of ?Tricky Dick?. By the time he left office, ?Tricky Dick? was a term of derision. Nixon was the slimy politician that Americans loved to hate. This is because ?Tricky Dick? came from a generation of American citizens who expected more out of their government than they do now. Many people may not have voted for the POTUS, but he was still everyone?s POTUS and deserved respect. People had faith in their government. They were civically engaged.

So America?s children can be forgiven if they do not know about the Constitution or the Supreme Court. Adults tend to only know these things as broken promises. The most enlightened among the electorate know them as noble experiments of a genteel age that have been betrayed by a generation of self-seekers and social climbers. It is not that American adults are ignorant of these things; it is that they have an instinctive mistrust of what they have become.

Is it any wonder that America?s children, who can pick up so readily on the unspoken assumptions of the adults around them, betray the same lack of civic spirit the electorate as a whole demonstrates?

How can we revive the civic spirit? It will not come with more high-stakes tests, even if those tests are in civics. It will not come with new curriculum or new project-based methods of teaching civics. It will not come with making American history and government a double period class in the fashion that math and science have labs.

No, reviving the civic spirit in children will only be possible once it is revived in the adults. There used to be a time when the government exercised its power of public domain over the television airwaves to cover issues of public moment. There used to be a time when the reporters actually investigated instead of accepting the words of politicians and business leaders at face value. There was a time when Americans tuned in to see their astronauts launch into outer space.

Today, all we have on the television is Snookie?s pregnancy or the Kardashians? bad hair day. All we have in the papers is partisan yellow journalism.

There was a time when a person (albeit, usually a white man) would be able to work for the same corporation for 30 years and then live off a decent pension in old age, supplemented by Social Security. There was a time when Americans felt as if they were getting ahead, before the age of credit cards and debt slavery. There was a time when, with government help, parents would be able to put their kids through college to get the education that was going to improve the life of the next generation.

Today, Americans move from one low-paying job to another. Creditors call their houses seven days a week to remind them of how behind they really are. A college education is no longer the magic bullet for intergenerational progress.

All the while, politicians are telling everyone that things are fine. The economy is always improving, or always on the verge of improving. The Dow Jones is up. Business leaders see bright days ahead if we just give them another tax cut and tighten our belts a little bit longer.

Americans have lost stock in America. Our children sense this and know better than to put any stock in it in the first place.

How to buy a Domain Name

?

Every day more people are wanting to know how to buy a domain name for a variety of reasons. Some want to start an online business, some want to have their own blog site, others just want to own the name because they might want to use it in the future.

If you want to know how to buy a domain for business purposes, you will want to decide on the right domain name as well as an affordable and reliable domain registrar.

It?s important for you to select the most appropriate domain name for your business. Evaluating your business relative to your company name, the products or services you intend to sell, and your target market will help you narrow-down domain names to those that you want to consider.

To be effective, you want your domain name to be short and simple. It should reflect the nature of your business or what you are planning to publish on your website. Avoid dashes or other symbols as this may confuse potential customers or make it difficult for them to remember your domain name.

Make a list of domain names that are most ideal for your business. The next step is to find out if those specific domain names you?ve chosen have already been registered by other owners.

A reliable domain registrar, like GoDaddy.com, will be allow you to check on the availability of the particular domain names on your list. If they are available, you can then enter your contact information and purchase the domain names.

You do want to select a registrar that you will be comfortable with. One that will provide you with a simple and easy way to buy your domain names and renew them. There a many reliable ones out there. I personally like to use GoDaddy.com and would highly recomment them. If you want to save a couple bucks do a search for GoDaddy discount codes before purchasing your domain name, as they are almost always available.

If you found this post helpful make sure you ?like? it and share it with others who could also get value from it.

New Evidence Released In Trayvon Martin Case May Complicate Public Debate

The debate surrounding what happened the night of Trayvon Martin's death and how the trial of his accused shooter will unfold, will become increasingly complex as the public learns new details from recently released evidence.

The State Attorney's Office officially released on Thursday a hefty collection of court documents including 67 CDs of witness statements, 911 calls, non-emergency calls, photos and surveillance videos, WESH Orlando reports.

The release is a major development and follows recently leaked information that revealed new details of the case earlier this week. But whether the information will prove beneficial to the defense or the prosecution remains unclear.

George Zimmerman killed an unarmed Martin on Feb. 26 in the gated community where Martin's father's girlfriend lived in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer called 911 and told a police dispatcher that Martin, who was returning from a trip to a nearby convenience store, "looked suspicious." After an altercation, Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest, subsequently telling local police that it was an act of self-defense.

Zimmerman has since been charged in the shooting and released on bond.

According to details from an autopsy report, which came to light Wednesday, Martin's death was caused by a single gunshot wound to the chest fired from "intermediate range," NBC News reported. One legal expert said that discovery alone will inevitably be a key for both sides.

"Time and space are often critical determinants in self defense cases," Ronald Carlson, professor at University of Georgia Law told The Huffington Post Black Voices. "Defendants often are at an advantage by saying 'the attacker was very close to me, I was in imminent danger of death.'"

"Intermediate range" can constitute anywhere from 8 inches to about 4 feet. Carlson said the case could rest heavily on that distance.

"If the [medical examiner] who will testify for the state comes toward the shorter range, that's not necessarily inconsistent with Zimmerman's account. But if we're out at 4 feet, then that's going to be very helpful to the prosecutor. If the evidence suggests that the person was not as close, then that puts the kibosh on the defendant's story."

Information from Martin's autopsy report emerged just one day after the medical records from Zimmerman's family physician were released, indicating that Zimmerman had a broken nose, two black eyes, lacerations to the back of the head and a minor back injury.

Carlson said the medical reports align with Zimmerman's account of the confrontation. "The damage to Zimmerman is clearly corroborated by the injuries, the location and the severity," he said. "Clearly, there was a big conflict going on."

But Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Martin?s family, said the leaked medical reports raise more questions than answers.
?You have to take all of this in full context,? Crump told The Huffington Post this afternoon. ?When someone leaks information they do it for a reason. Someone is trying to manipulate and bolster George Zimmerman?s self-defense claims.?

A number of points remain troubling, Crump said, from the information gleaned from the medical records and the fact that Zimmerman visited his family doctor the day after the shooting.

ABC News reported on Wednesday that Zimmerman sought an appointment with his family doctor to get legal clearance to return to work, which Crump said is a clear indication that Zimmerman was not as badly hurt as he claimed.

The leaked report said Zimmerman was taking the prescription drugs Adderall, which is prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, and Temazepam, an insomnia medication, said Crump.

?He was on uppers and downers at the same time,? the attorney said. ?These are medications that can cause side effects such as agitation, delusions and mood swings. That?s what he was on prior to the shooting. The question becomes, did those drugs have an effect on George Zimmerman the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin??

ABC News also reported that the teen had traces of the drug THC, which is found in marijuana, in his system the night of the shooting.

As for the trial itself, Carlson said it could be a challenge for the prosecution simply because Zimmerman is the only witness to Martin's death. "The story line is going to be set first and foremost by the surviving party," he said. "It's not insurmountable, but it certainly gives the edge in the opening stages to the defense."

Va. lawmakers' reject gay judicial nominee

?

By msnbc.com news services

Critics denounced a vote Tuesday by Virginia lawmakers rejecting a gay prosecutor for a judgeship in the state?s capital, saying the representatives were on the ?wrong side of history? and pushing a ?form of bigotry,? according to local local media reports.

Tracy Thorne-Begland, a prosecutor for 12 years in General District Court in Richmond, was the only one of more than three dozen judicial nominees who failed to win approval from the House of Delegates, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. The final tally was 33 for and 31 against, while 36 either didn?t vote or abstained. Fifty-one votes were needed to approve.

Thorne-Begland?s nomination for the bench in the same court where he was a prosecutor came under scrutiny last week after the Family Foundation of Virginia, Republican Delegate Robert G. Marshall and others said they opposed his nomination because of his candor on gay rights. They said they didn?t object to him because of his sexuality, The Washington Post reported.

?He holds himself out as being married,? Marshall?said, according to the Post. In Virginia, where gay marriage is not legal, he said Thorne-Begland?s ?life is a contradiction to the requirement of submission to the (state) Constitution.?

But Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Michael N. Herring described the decision as an ?embarrassment? for Virginia that cast ?a definite pall on the state,? and said Thorne-Begland would have done a great job.

?It's hard to think about what happened in the General Assembly and not conclude that it's a form of bigotry,? Herring told reporters, the Times-Dispatch reported.

"We are on the wrong side of history," said Democratic Sen. A. Donald McEachin, of the rejection. "This is not our finest hour."

Thorne-Begland told the Times-Dispatch after the vote: "I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of the city of Richmond and the great Commonwealth of Virginia."

Thorne-Begland announced he was a gay Navy officer some two decades ago on the television program ?Nightline.? That led to an? honorable discharge for the decorated officer under the military's former "don't ask, don't tell," policy, according to the Times-Dispatch.

That policy, repealed in 2010, banned gay men and women from serving openly in the military.

The Virginia assembly?s decision came a week after North Carolina voting down gay marriage while President Barack Obama became the country?s first president to support same-sex unions. A Gallup poll released last Tuesday found that 50 percent of Americans supported same-sex marriage while 48 percent were opposed. It was the second time that at least half of Americans had backed same-sex marriage.

Your Microbiome Community Brings New Meaning to "We the People"

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

?No man is an island, entire of itself,? wrote English poet John Donne. Nearly four centuries later science is gaining a fuller appreciation of just how literally true that is.

In addition to the bacteria that can make us sick, researchers have known for a few decades that we play host to friendly microbes as well. They help our body by performing important tasks such as breaking down food components to make them digestible or processing nutrients so we can make use of them. Although the womb is sterile, we start acquiring our microscopic guests the minute we are born.

The sheer number and broader influence of these bugs may surprise you. For starters, microbes outnumber your body cells by 10 to 1. (The bacteria are much smaller than human cells, so their total weight is often estimated to be around two to five pounds.) In effect, we are each a walking superorganism, hosting our own unique microcommunity. No two individuals share the same makeup of microbes and their genes, not even identical twins. Nobel Prize winner Joshua Lederberg dubbed this inner ecosystem a microbiome, acknowledging its complexity and interconnectedness.

More to the point, your health, your life span?and even some of your actions?may have more to do with the genetic variation in those microorganisms you host than they do with your own genes. Our cover story, ?The Ultimate Social Network,? by Jennifer Ackerman, describes the efforts to map our human microbiome?no easy feat when certain critters, such as the gut bacteria that prosper in an oxygen-free environment, are challenging to grow in petri dishes in a laboratory. The results are illuminating. As you will learn, among other things, microorganism groups may influence not only how well we digest but also how much we eat. In addition, they have an important part in how well our immune system performs.

For a different kind of community effort?one involving teenagers and science that can benefit humankind?see the box at the left.
