Google Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean"

Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" is a solid refinement of what is now the world's most popular OS on new smartphones. While calling it 5.0 would have been a stretch, it's more significant than you'd expect for a point upgrade. For now, you can only get Android 4.1 on a few devices, including the?Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($199.99, 4 stars) and Samsung Nexus S (3.5 stars) phones, and the Google Nexus 7 ($199, 4.5 stars) and?Motorola Xoom (3.5 stars) tablets. The upgrades will roll out sometime in the middle of July as over-the-air updates. There's nothing revolutionary about Android 4.1?the new Google Now feature comes close, but it doesn't work well enough just yet. Still, there are so many minor updates and overall performance improvements that Jelly Bean adds up to our new Editors' Choice for mobile smartphone OSes.

User Interface Improvements
For this review, I tested Android 4.1 on an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Right from the beginning, the setup process was smooth, and faster than it is with earlier Android phones. Most of the default options were already checked, for example, and I had no problem adding my existing Google account. Once you're in, the OS walks you along with a series of translucent tip screens that appear over the home screen and main menu. This hand-holding is definitely helpful if you're new to the OS, though experienced users will already know many of the tips.

There's more going on here than just minor UI refinements, though. At Google I/O, Google engineering director David Burke talked about Project Butter, which was the company's effort to improve Android performance enough that it feels "buttery" smooth in use. This effort affected many aspects of the OS, such as improved vsync timing for faster frame rates on the display itself, triple graphics buffering for preventing dropped frames in video games, and improved overall touch-screen response.

On the Galaxy Nexus, there's definitely a noticeable improvement. You can now easily resize and move around icons and widgets on each home screen panel or delete apps by swiping the icon up, which causes it to disappear. The system font ("Roboto") already looked sharp and smooth before, and still does. But menu animations, finger swipes, and scrolling now feel at least as solid as they do on iOS, and possibly even a bit better in spots. The Galaxy Nexus is no longer one of the fastest Android phones on the market, but you wouldn't know that from how nicely the unit responds with Jelly Bean loaded.

Keyboard, Web Browser, and Messaging
The new predictive keyboard is another solid upgrade. I spent quite some time typing on it, and it seemed to do a much better job than before at guessing the word I meant, even whenever I typed several letters incorrectly. The prediction function works just as it does on Apple iOS 5.1.1 (Free, 4.5 stars), in that it can figure out your left finger was slightly to the left each time, for example, and then figure out what word you meant based on that and the grammar of the sentence you're typing.

The new predictive text engine also one-ups the that of iOS on the iPhone, in that it still shows the bar beneath the text window with possible alternatives?rather than just one the way the iPhone does?and then pops it in with a little animated fade as you continue typing. These are small details, but they're beautiful in action. This is exactly the kind of polish Android needed.

The Web browser offers smooth handling of multiple tabs, which you can swipe among on a separate screen. One issue; while auto-rotate was turned off by default, when I turned it on, I noticed some pages had trouble formatting columns of text when flipping between landscape and portrait mode. In other words, the screen would be formatted correctly in one orientation, but then end up with a thin column and tons of white space in the other.

Adobe has officially dropped support for Flash, starting with Jelly Bean. This doesn't bother me as much as it bothers some other people. Even when it works on mobile devices, it doesn't really work all that well. The end of Flash for Android is hardly a surprise, at any rate, as Adobe said months ago it was discontinuing all mobile Flash development.

In the messaging app, tap the new message icon, and it pops up names and photos from your contact list as you type letters, including alternate phone numbers indented slightly as compared with the main one. I tested this function with a book of about 1,500 contacts and it was super-fast.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department says the work to remove a tsunami dock from Agate Beach could begin as soon at July 30. The 66-foot dock will be dismantled and hauled away from the beach north of Newport under an $84,000 contract with Ballard Diving and Salvage of Vancouver, Wash. (AP) ? Find a boxcar-sized dock on the beach, or a soccer ball with Japanese symbols? The state of Oregon wants to hear from you. Just dial 211.

Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber announced the hotline at a news conference Thursday, saying it's an easy way for residents and visitors to report Japanese tsunami debris. Beginning Friday, the hotline will be staffed during business hours and will take recorded messages at other times.

"I just want to make sure that Oregonians understand that we are on top of this," Kitzhaber said.

The hotline will allow the public to help keep Oregon's beaches clean and return any missing Japanese property to its rightful owners, the governor said.

He also said Brig. Gen. Mike Caldwell, deputy director of the Oregon National Guard and interim director of the state's Office of Emergency Management, will be responsible for coordinating the response and cleanup efforts among state agencies.

It's important to quickly collect and throw away tsunami debris to keep beaches clean and prevent the introduction of invasive species, Caldwell said. Officials are asking that people not take home debris to keep as souvenirs, but they say there's little chance of the debris being harmful to human health.

People should be especially mindful of items that might have sentimental value or personal significance to someone in Japan, officials said. When such items wash up, Oregon will work with the Japanese consulate to return them.

Helping with tsunami debris is a new responsibility for the 211 hotline, which was created in 2004 to help people in the Portland area get connected with health and community services. It's since expanded to cover 80 percent of Oregon's population, according to the website of the nonprofit organization that operates it.

Oregon will work with California, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii to request money from the federal government to help with their efforts. If the debris had washed up all at once, it would unquestionably qualify for federal disaster funds, Kitzhaber said. But since it's emerging in pieces, the states will have to work harder, he said.

The Japanese government has estimated 1.5 million tons of debris is floating in the ocean from the March 2011 tsunami. Some U.S. experts think the bulk of that trash will never reach shore, but others fear a massive, slowly unfolding environmental disaster.

Debris that already has arrived on the shores of North America includes oyster farm buoys, soccer balls, boats and a shipping container holding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with Japanese license plates. Earlier this month, a 66-foot dock ripped loose by the big waves landed on Agate Beach near Newport, Ore.

Biologists and volunteers scraped 1.5 tons of marine life from the dock, and Oregon officials say it will cost about $85,000 to remove the structure.

Debris floating in the water is a serious threat to fishermen and other mariners, said Terry Thompson, a Lincoln County Commissioner and commercial fisherman.

I'm Sorry for Cursing - Colon / rectal cancer: And...chemo!

First of all, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent messages with words of encouragement and promises to pray.? I needed it yesterday more than you can know.? Despite the chemo, today has been a much better day emotionally.

So, chemo.? I got my own room today, suckas!? It's kind of nice to know that people aren't watching me drool while I nod off.? It was very quiet.? Nice today.? I'll get the pump off after lunch on Friday.? Very uneventful.

My plan now is to rest and knit.? I finished up some surprises and I'm now moving on to a dress for Reese.? We shall see how that turns out.? So far, so good, I think, although I never quite know until I'm finished.

If I don't pop in for a week or so, no worries.? Our family is going to do some traveling.? :)

A new website in legal services domain was launched: http://www.attorney-personal-injury-los-angeles.com, this was designed by Bright Bulb Solutions, a Los Angeles based Internet marketing company.

The website features profiles, detailing the background and expertise of Los Angeles Personal Injury Attorney David Drexler and the other attorneys in the firm, as well as highlighting the firm?s accomplishments with an impressive list of multi million dollar verdicts & settlements won by the firm in the past. It also features detailed and vital information regarding the types of personal injury cases that the firm handles including medical and legal malpractice, vehicle accidents, product and premises liability as well as catastrophic injuries such as brain and spinal cord injuries.

Michael Garcia, Vice President of Marketing for Bright Bulb Solutions, says that his personal experience with David Drexler?s law firm made it simpler to reach for the brass ring while designing the state-of-the-art website. ?I knew David Drexler?s good work because I am one of his ?Clients for life?,? says Garcia. ?The way this particular Los Angeles law firm operates brings a lot of honor to the profession of personal injury law. We wanted the website to reflect that fact.?

Over the past thirty years, Drexler?s Los Angeles law firm has recovered over one hundred and fifty million dollars on behalf of their personal injury clients, winning an unprecedented number of multi-million dollar awards by way of settlements and jury verdicts in all types of personal injury cases, as well as a wide variety of tort claims including insurance and corporate fraud, sexual harassment and assault, and business disputes.

Drexler, who was nominated as ?California Trial Attorney of the Year?, has been called ?A Super Lawyer? by LA Magazine. LA Direct Magazine has called Drexler ?A big city attorney with small town values.?

?This website had to be as great of an Internet experience as David is a great personal injury attorney in Los Angeles,? says Garcia. ?As a marketer, you always hope for the opportunity to market a service that is high quality, sincere and valuable. When someone desperately needs help, we want them find David Drexler.?

For over three decades the Law Offices of David Drexler has distinguished itself as one of the premiere Los Angeles personal injury law firms; a full-service and diverse firm that handles virtually every type of personal injury claim, earning the firm an elite standing in the Southern California legal community. While based in Los Angeles, Drexler?s firm serves the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and the Inland Empire.

?I really appreciate Michael?s efforts and dedication to accomplishing our goals,? says attorney David Drexler. ?Not only because he has created a truly special website, but because he has taken the time to understand who and what we are and because he really cared about how the finished product would reflect my values.?

?The website accurately reflects who we are and who we?ve always been. That?s how we made a name for ourselves. So I think the company that created this website captured us. It?s highly effective that way. They did a great job.?

(AP) ? Shares of Malaysian palm oil giant Felda soared as much as 20 percent in their first day of trading Thursday, overcoming weakness in global stock markets after the company completed the world's biggest IPO this year after Facebook.

State-backed Felda Global Venture Holdings hit a high of 5.46 ringgit ($1.71) shortly after listing on the main board of Bursa Malaysia, up from its initial public offering price of 4.55 ringgit. It eased to 5.29 ringgit at the end of the morning session.

Felda's first day jump defies sustained weakness in global stock markets and reflects strong investor interest in the world's third-largest palm oil company. It also offset worries over a lower-than-expected net profit in the quarter through March.

Felda raised around 10 billion ringgit ($3.1 billion) in the largest IPO in Asia this year. It is the second biggest in the world after Facebook, which raised $16 billion but suffered a slumping share price after its listing in May. A volatile global economy has led to the shelving of several major IPOs in Asia including a planned $2.5 billion share sale by Formula One in Singapore and a $1.5 billion listing of London-based Graff Diamonds in Hong Kong.

Felda's IPO, however, was supported by 12 institutional investors including Qatar Investment and French agribusiness giant Louis Dreyfus.

Feldal President Sabri Ahmad said the share price was within expectations. He said Felda, which also plants rubber and sugar cane, would expand in Southeast Asia and Africa.

"Food business is quite resilient in a recession," he said.

The IPO had met resistance from thousands of ethnic Malay farmers, who partly own the company and fear they would lose out. But its strong trading debut is expected to help quell concerns and will boost Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is expected to call general elections this year. Felda was set up by the government in the 1950s as part of a rural development plan to alleviate poverty by giving poor Malays land to grow cash crops, mainly palm oil and rubber.

Najib has assured the farmers that the listing would be profitable for them, and promised a 1.68 billion ringgit ($527 million) windfall for the farmers and their families. Felda has also allocated 20 percent of its shares to a trust fund for the farmers, who will receive annual dividends, officials said.

The farmers are mainly ethnic Malay Muslims, who make up about two-thirds of Malaysia's 28 million people. The IPO was a delicate issue for the government because their protests could undermine Najib's coalition ? which is struggling to regain lost ground to a resurgent opposition ? in national polls.

The Felda group owns 70 palm oil mills, seven refineries and a string of other manufacturing plants nationwide. It produces about 3 million tons of crude palm oil annually, or about 8 percent of world output.

After Felda, Asia's largest hospital operator Integrated Healthcare Holdings is also planning an IPO that could raise as much as 1.9 billion ringgit ($596 million).

Nokia 808 PureView review: the future of mobile imaging, wrapped in smartphone's past

The Nokia 808 PureView has a 41-megapixel camera sensor. But you knew that. The crystallization of five years of imaging R&D has landed, and the timing couldn't have been better for Nokia. Alongside uncomfortable financial reading, its move to Windows Phone hasn't exactly set the smartphone world alight just yet. It's seemingly established itself as the go-to WinPho choice for American customers thanks to some aggressive pricing, but with news that the next iteration of Windows Phone won't come to the Lumia 900, many will hold out for Nokia's next handset. Whatever that device will be, it's likely to bring the same PureView technology we've got here on the Nokia 808 PureView -- a Symbian-based handset whose software has seen better days. However, OS be damned, it still blew away attendees at this year's Mobile World Congress. Impressive stuff, given that it's the same show where HTC's admirable One series debuted.

That huge sensor is paired with a new five-element Carl Zeiss lens and a refreshed flash with double the strength of the one on the Nokia N8 -- the existing cameraphone champ. But behind the technical bullet points, it's how Nokia maximizes the 41-megapixel sensor, oversampling with those pixels to create improved 5-, 8- , 3- and 2-megapixel images, reducing noise and improving low-light performance. However, when it comes to software, Symbian Belle (with Feature Pack 1 in tow) lags behind the likes of Android, iOS and Windows Phone in user experience and app provision. Similarly, the chunky handset flies in the opposite direction of the trend for slim smartphones. Is that camera module really all Nokia thinks (and hopes) it is? What's more, is Symbian relevant enough for such future-facing goodness? Let's find out.

Wildfire victims crowd shelters as fight continues

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Fire crews fought to save the U.S. Air Force Academy and residents begged for information on the fate of their homes Wednesday after a night of terror sent thousands of people fleeing a raging Colorado Springs wildfire.

More than 30,000 have been displaced by the fire, including thousands who frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night after it barreled into neighborhoods in the foothills west and north of Colorado's second-largest city. With flames looming overhead, they clogged roads shrouded in smoke and flying embers, their fear punctuated by explosions of bright orange flame that signaled yet another house had been claimed.

"The sky was red, the wind was blowing really fast and there were embers falling from the sky," said Simone Covey, a 26-year-old mother of three who fled an apartment near Garden of the Gods park and was staying at a shelter. "I didn't really have time to think about it. I was just trying to keep my kids calm."

Wilma Juachon sat under a tree at an evacuation center, wearing a mask to block the smoke. A tourist from California, she was evacuated from a fire near Rocky Mountain National Park last week and, now, from her Colorado Springs hotel.

"I said I hope it never happens again, and guess what?" Juachon said.

Shifting winds challenged firefighters trying to contain the 29-square-mile Waldo Canyon blaze and extinguish hot spots inside the city's western suburbs. Winds were calmer Wednesday night.

Some 3,000 more people were evacuated to the west of the fire, Teller County authorities said Wednesday, and Teller County courts were closed through Thursday.

Meanwhile, the White House said President Barack Obama will tour fire-stricken areas of Colorado on Friday and thank firefighters battling some of the worst fires to hit the American West in decades.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said Obama's visit to Colorado, considered a key battleground state in the presidential election, would not tax the city's already-strained police force. Gov. John Hickenlooper said he expected the president might sign a disaster declaration that would allow for more federal aid.

The full scope of the fire remained unknown. So intense were the flames and so thick the smoke that rescue workers weren't able to tell residents which structures were destroyed and which ones were still standing. Steve Cox, a spokesman for Mayor Steve Bach, reported that at least dozens of homes had been consumed.

Indeed, authorities were too busy Wednesday struggling to save homes in near-zero visibility to count how many had been destroyed in what is the latest test for a drought-parched and tinder-dry state. Crews also were battling a deadly and destructive wildfire in northern Colorado and another that flared Tuesday night near Boulder.

Carey said officials had no plans to release the numbers of homes destroyed ? insisting residents have a right to be told first, in private.

FBI spokesman Dave Joly said federal investigators are working closely with local and state law enforcement to determine if any of Colorado's fires were deliberately set or resulted from criminal activity. He did not elaborate.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown said his personnel heroically saved many homes in the midst of the firestorm. The strategy: protecting houses adjacent to those in flames to prevent a domino effect and then racing to the next suburban hot spot, a technique he called "triage." Federal firefighters worked with U.S. Army bulldozer crews from nearby Fort Carson to create perimeter lines.

The Waldo Canyon Fire burned about 10 acres along the southwest boundary of the Air Force Academy campus. No injuries or damage to structures ? including the iconic Cadet Chapel ? were reported.

Academy officials were relocating about 550 cadets off academy grounds late Wednesday. About 200 cadets in summer academics were being moved to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and 350 others in airmanship and other training programs were released to local sponsor families, the school said. The cadet area isn't immediately threatened, and an incoming class of more than 1,000 is still scheduled to arrive Thursday.

Fort Carson had 121 soldiers building firebreaks around parts of the academy, aided by equipment including 10 heavy bulldozers, four excavators, 13 military transportation and support vehicles, and one commercial road grader, Army officials said.

The Red Cross was accommodating victims at its shelters, with space enough for perhaps 2,500 people. Most evacuees were staying with family and friends.

Colorado wasn't the only state affected by fire, as several burned throughout the parched West.

Tom Harbour, director of fire and aviation management for the U.S. Forest Service, said that with several fires burning, there is competition for firefighting resources, but "we're still at a point where we've got lots of available assets to mix and match on individual incidents."

Harbour said there's a difference between what incident commanders want and what they need to fight a fire effectively. And despite some criticism, he said the agency has been working to get equipment where it's needed most. Four military C-130 tankers, which can each carry up to 3,000 gallons of water, are positioned to cover the blazes burning near Colorado Springs and Fort Collins, as well as the entire Front Range if another fire were to break out, he said. At total of 18 air tankers were assigned to wildfires across the region.

Overall, there have been fewer fires and less acreage burned for the first six months of the year than for the same period in the previous six years. Some states are seeing fires earlier this year, but Harbour said resources are far from being exhausted.

"With over 10,000 firefighters in the Forest Service and the ability to get over 700 aircraft of all types, we're feeling cautiously confident when you look at the season as a whole," Harbour said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? A central Utah wildfire has destroyed at least 56 structures, mainly homes, and continues to burn with little containment, authorities said Wednesday. Officials expected the damage estimate to rise considerably as they continue their assessment of the fire-ravaged area between Fountain Green and Fairview and north across the Utah County line. Authorities were about halfway through their damage assessment of a fire that has burned about 72 square miles. Officials returned to an evacuated area and found a woman dead Tuesday.

? Wildfires that have torched more than 200 square miles and burned dozens of homes in southeastern Montana spread farther Wednesday, with additional evacuations ordered after a blaze south of Roundup jumped a perimeter line built by firefighters. The growing Dahl fire, which has burned more than 60 homes by one estimate, forced an unknown number of residents to leave their homes near its southern flank, on top of an estimated 600 people evacuated the day before.

"That's one of the most dangerous fires in the history of Montana," Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.

? A wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from about 2,000 acres to 12,000 acres, or nearly 19 square miles, officials said Wednesday. Authorities worked to get campers out of the area.

Insurance is a form of risk management. It can be defined as the transfer of a risk to an insurance company in exchange for a premium paid by the insured at regular intervals. Insurance is useful both for the insurer and the insured. The insurer earns profit by investing the money of the insured and getting returns on it. The insured, on the other hand, has the security of the sum assured which he will earn at the end of the insurance term.

In United Kingdom, you get insurance products like motor insurance, home insurance, pet insurance, life insurance, travel insurance, health insurance and business insurance etc. motor insurance covers both the driver of the car and the car itself. Health insurance covers medical bills incurred due to illness or accidents. Travel insurance covers certain losses such as medical expenses, loss or theft of personal belongings while traveling, traveling delay etc. pet insurance will cover your pet?s medical expenses, loss or death. Home insurance covers your house and in some cases its contents. Damages arising due to natural calamities like earthquake, floods etc are excluded. You are also not supposed to get the assured sum when the damage caused was an ?act of god? or a result of war. Business insurance covers losses that you may incur in your business.

The type of risk involved to the risk determines how much will be the premium. For example, if you have bought a home insurance and your house is in good shape and situated near a fire station, the insurance company will charge you lower premiums. Risk factor therefore determines the premium amount.

Law of Attraction ? The Secret | ExpertsArticles.com

Laws are made for a reason. They provide feedback to the individual whether their behaviour is acceptable to the standards upheld by the applicable law. Some people get away with breaking the law, some don?t, and others become wrongfully accused. The law is not perfect in its justice and righting what we deem is wrong, unless you are talking about the only law that really matters ? the law of attraction.

What is the Law of Attraction?

The law of attraction is the belief that like attracts like, and that positive and negative thoughts bring about positive and negative results, respectively. In a nutshell, you attract to you people and consequences that are a direct reflection of the thoughts with feeling you are having on a day to day basis.

One of the most famous books ever published was based on the law of attraction and that ?thoughts are things?. Napoleon Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich in 1937 after interviewing hundreds of Americas most affluent people and boiled down their success in their personal and business life to the fact that these individuals understood that how they thought was going to create their reality.

This book is a timeless classic due to the fact that it is rooted in a timeless principle ? the law of attraction.

Law of Attraction ? It?s Universal

The law of attraction is one that is universal in nature and knows no physical boundaries. Its the one law that is consistent across the earth, stars, and planets. Its the one law you can never hide from, avoid, or impose on someone else.

That?s right, the law of attraction is as perfect a law as there is on this planet.

What?s better, it is unwavering and always gives back to the person what they rightly deserve, based on their thoughts and feelings. You can?t fake out the law of attraction. You can?t ask for a ?do over? from the past. However, you can literally get what you want no matter how small or large it may seem to you at the time, in the ?future?.

After all, the law of attraction doesn?t care how impossible something seems?it only cares that you believe it, and think about it often.

Implications of the Law of Attraction

The effect this law has on your life is how you decide to leverage it.

Whether we like to admit it or not, we have no choice but to accept that the life we have currently is a residual of our past thoughts we had with feeling (conscious or subconscious). The good news is if we don?t like it, we can always change our thoughts to reflect a more positive outcome for our future.

This may seem easy at first, and it is with regards to its simplicity in its nature, but practicing the law of attraction on a continual basis is what stops people from getting what they truly want.

If you simply decide to change you thoughts on a daily basis, with belief, after 30 days you could expect those thoughts to start becoming your reality. For some, they start seeing results right away! However, if you want this to be a constant flow of universal ?goodness?, you need to practice the law of attraction every day by examining your thoughts and making sure they are only positive in nature and focus on what you want to help it become your reality.

If this seems difficult to you, you are going to have to accept that all your thoughts, regardless if they are negative or positive, will manifest in a physical way. That?s a lot of power to control, but the possibilities are endless.

You can literally leverage your thoughts to become who you want to be! That?s the power of the law of attraction!

What?s a Practical Way to Use The Law of Attraction?

There are 2 important components is using the law of attraction. Expressing gratitude, and believing what you are wishing for is already yours.

Some people call it an ?attitude of gratitude?. For you to attract more of the things you want in life, you need to be thankful for what you already have. So if you are focused on creating more wealth for yourself, you can?t think about all the debt you currently are in (this is the one aspect many people trip on). You need to be grateful for the money you do have and feel good about it every single day. This will help you attract more money (and with the right actions, it can really accelerate the process).

The other important factor when using the law of attraction is that you believe that whatever you want is already in existence. The mind can not tell the difference between what you believe is your reality, and what is not. Therefore, if you believe in your mind that your new car is already yours, it will help attract that to your existence. Conversely, if you are thinking about how you dislike your current vehicle, and you are hoping to have a new one in the future, that?s where it will remain.

So express gratitude, believe you already have what you want, and be ready to receive it.

A Law of Attraction Exercise

I recently held an exercise with my business partners on using the law of attraction. Each day, for 30 straight days, we expressed genuine gratitude for what was currently in our existence, and believed what we wanted was already ours, and we just needed to be ready to receive it.

Within a few days of this law of attraction mastermind, people were already starting to notice some serendipitous activity with them, and their family! This brought it home that an attitude of gratitude is the only way to live, and that our thoughts needed to be on course with what we wanted to come into our existence.

I encourage you to use the law of attraction in your life every single day to get what you want. Failure to take control and use it wisely, will haphazardly create your life.

Let the universe know what you want, be clear about it, and believe it is already yours. Back that up with gratitude for the things in you life you already have, and you are on your way to create a new existence, tailored specifically by you and the law of attraction.

Remember ? you?re reading this post for a reason. Don?t take it for granted, and be grateful you found it. It comes from a source that knows EXACTLY how to get what you want.

Giving Kids With ADHD Medication At A ... - Yeshiva World News

Experts are suggesting putting kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder on drugs early in order to improve their academic performance, especially in math.

How early? Some say as it could benefit kids as young as six.

According to research published in a recent issue of Pediatrics, giving younger kids with ADHD stimulant medications can improve their grades and test scores.

A study of 12,000 students out of Iceland concluded that getting kids with ADHD started on drugs like Ritalin and Adderoll earlier were less likely to see their grades fall between the fourth and seventh grades.

Interestingly, Iceland has a national database that records all outpatient prescriptions, helping researchers to see which kids were prescribed medications to treat ADHD and at what age they began drug treatment, according to WebMD.

Girls with ADHD who were treated at a young age, showed a more marked improvement than their male counterparts.

?Performance of kids with ADHD tends to decline over time, especially if medication is delayed,? said Helga Zoega, an epidemiologist at the Institute for Translational Epidemiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and lead author of the study told ABC News. ?Starting medication earlier may halt this decline.?

A majority of kids are diagnosed with ADHD by age 7, she said.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently broadened its age guidelines for ADHD to children as young as four years-old.

The Acedemy recommends treating children ages four to five with behavior therapy before resorting to drug treatment.

?Most families come to medication as a last resort,? Ruth Hughes, chief executive officer of the nonprofit Children and Adults with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or CHADD told Bloomberg News in October.

Should Your Not-For-Profit Organisation have a Business Plan?

by Morri Young on June 25, 2012

Is generating revenues for your non-profit organisation at the top of your list? Perhaps you?re working on attracting funds from diversified sources (individual donors, foundation grants, etc.) or even expanding your organisation through adding programs, new products or mergers?

These are a few main reasons why many non-profits are developing business plans. A business plan is basically about money. Best viewed as a (short-term) plan for a specific service or product, a business plan should be a scale model of the organisation. A realistic model will prepare you for the actual scenario, will help persuade your colleagues that you have done your research, and will help you explain the theories you depend on to make it all work. In addition, since most non-profit organisations receive government funding, you may be asked to produce a business plan before funds are dispersed.

Business plans are often commissioned by an organisation?s CEO or the Treasurer of the Finance Committee but it?s also imperative that the plan involves input from a variety of colleagues within the organisation. This will ensure that the vision and goals decided on are shared by everyone and can be more easily adhered to. Without getting too theoretical, the business plan should be a document that guides your organisation?s daily work. You should add new ideas, suggestions and changes along the way, referring back to it constantly.

The framework or components that are included in a business plan include:

  • Summary of the business and a definition of the venture. This should include a description of the organisation and the product or service, the vision and purpose of the organisation, as well as the impact operational activities may have in the future.
  • Market analysis that includes your planned customers, beneficiaries and the competitive environment.
  • Management and staff. This should describe the people who will be responsible for developing, marketing and operating the venture including their relevant skills and experience.
  • Benchmarks for performing and evaluating work and processes.
  • Financial requirements including initial start-up costs, cash flow and restricted revenue (that should include a financial plan).
  • Projections of short and long-term profitability.
  • Marketing plans for pricing, customer relations, media relations, branding, etc.
  • Analysis of risks and contingencies. These should include both current and potential risks and the mitigation strategies planned in preparation to solve arising problems.

A business plan has numerous benefits depending on which reasons are relevant to your particular organisation. These benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Helping to formulate ideas and goals while clarifying your vision.
  • Providing realistic estimates including start-up costs and how much you will need to finance or invest.
  • Identifying and defining factors for success, corporate objectives and profitability.
  • Defining your target audience and convincing investors to fund your organisation.
  • Recognising the need to change or re-evaluate your plans around the changing world and grow your business.
  • Understanding and minimising the risks involved.
  • Monitoring the results and planning for the long-term.

Business plans are quickly becoming a benefit and requirement for non-profit organisations if they want to prosper and survive. Although not a guarantee for success, a business plan can now, more than ever before, assist organisations to think and act strategically in order to achieve their vision and goals.
